The National Screening Advisory Committee (NSAC) provides advice on the Ministry of Health's screening policy work programme. NSAC reports to the Director-General of Health.

Screening is the testing of individuals with no symptoms to reduce mortality or morbidity related to a disease or condition.

Screening is not just a test, but a service pathway.

The screening pathway includes:
  • being invited to be screened
  • being given information about the potential benefits and risks associated with the screening test, diagnosis, and treatment
  • being offered a test or questionnaire
  • making an informed decision about whether or not to be screened
  • having the screening test
  • receiving the screening test results
  • undergoing assessment and diagnosis when the screening test is positive
  • undergoing possible treatment for a positive diagnosis and;
  • understanding there are activities to monitor and evaluate all the stages in the screening pathway.
