The National Screening Advisory Committee (NSAC) provides advice on the Ministry of Health's screening policy work programme. NSAC reports to the Director-General of Health.
Screening is the testing of individuals with no symptoms to reduce mortality or morbidity related to a disease or condition.
Screening is not just a test, but a service pathway.
The screening pathway includes:
being invited to be screened
being given information about the potential benefits and risks associated with the screening test, diagnosis, and treatment
being offered a test or questionnaire
making an informed decision about whether or not to be screened
having the screening test
receiving the screening test results
undergoing assessment and diagnosis when the screening test is positive
undergoing possible treatment for a positive diagnosis and;
understanding there are activities to monitor and evaluate all the stages in the screening pathway.
